Nepotism Row: Saif, Varun, Karan Take A Dig At Kangana At IIFA 2017
Kangana Ranaut and Karan Johar’s spat over nepotism reared its head again at the 2017 IIFA awards.
It started when Varun Dhawan came to the stage to take his award for the best performance in a comic role for ‘Dishoom’. Saif Ali Khan, who was hosting the show along with Kangana Ranaut, brought up the nepotism issue by telling Varun Dhawan that he had made it big in the industry because of his father David Dhawan, a famous director.
“You are here because of your pappa,” Saif told Varun jokingly, to which the latter replied,“You are here because of your mummy (referring to Sharmila Tagore).”
The duo’s conversation was soon joined by Karan Johar who commented that he was in the industry because of his father, filmmaker Yash Johar.
This was followed by the three Bollywood stars shouting, “Nepotism rocks”.
It didn’t end here. The discussion was further escalated when Saif and Varun sang Bole chudiyaan Bole kangana from Johar’s film ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..’.
But the director quickly reacted, saying, “Kangana nahi bole toh achha hai (It’s better if Kangana doesn’t speak).”
The debate surrounding nepotism kicked off in March when the ‘Queen’ actress graced chat show ‘Koffee With Karan’ for promoting her movie ‘Rangoon’ along with Saif Ali Khan.
During the show, Kangana called Karan Johar ,”Flag-bearer of nepotism”, implying that he is averse to the entry of outsiders in the industry. She also confronted him for mocking her English accent. The final blow to Karan came when she declared that he would essay the character of the antagonist in her autobiography.
Unable to stomach the humiliation, Karan accused Kangana of playing the woman card. “I’m done with Kangana playing the woman and victim card. I am done! You cannot be this victim every time and have a sad story to tell about how you’ve been terrorized by the bad world of the industry … leave it.”
